"Tron: Legacy", dir. Joe Kosinski

promo pic of Tron: Legacy

Yesterday I went to see Tron: Legacy. In 3D, no less. And I must say I quite liked it. I hadn't expected anything from the film (or rather I'd expected it to suck monumentally) so I wasn't disappointed, and instead even pleasantly surprised.

The plot is pretty good, and the effects great. Although I don't buy lightcycles running on realistically curved trajectories. I mean, come on.

We get to know Dillinger's son who, despite his name, is harmless enough, if a bit greedy. And notably, not the villain. In fact, the choice of the main baddie is rather interesting: Clu - a program created by Kevin Flynn (and thus wearing his face) to help him and Tron build a new system.

There is Tron himself, though I wish his sub-plot was developed more fully or had a more defined ending. Oh, I've just thought of something. I took a look at some fan fiction and saw Rinzler described as "purring". Personally, I think the sound was more like a hard drive working. And a note in case of potential fanfic: sort of an "outside" sound, perhaps one indicating Tron's original objectives, i.e. fighting for users, being overwritten. More realistically, I think the writers of the film with this helmet/sound combo were recalling Lord Vader from Star Wars - first good, then bad, then injured, cue the helmet of doom and heavy breathing. And after all, we can see Clu (or was it someone else?) almost splitting Tron's head with his disc. I know, I'm clever :)

There was also obligatory "potentail girlfriend", Quorra, whom I rather liked. She's got a great line: she shows Sam one of Verne's books and asks if he knows Jules Verne. Sam answers "sure" and Quorra goes all fan-girly and asks "What's he like?" Plus, she's pretty and has mean fighting skills. Me likes.

So yeah, the film is actually good and there's no in-your-face romance which makes me like it a bit more (although I still prefer the original Tron. Ah, to see it remade for 3D...) Anyway, worth seeing.
